Tyresö Municipality – Digital Assistant Nurse in Home Care

A digital assistant nurse logs into Cuviva’s system every morning and responds to chats with users. During the day, the digital assistant nurse answers questions, holds video meetings, updates users’ calendars, and adds new information to the app’s start page. For Tyresö, this is part of the preventive work in line with the new Social Services Act, such as counteracting involuntary loneliness, stimulating physical activity, and encouraging healthy eating habits.

The aim is also to replace physical interventions with digital visits and support for self-help. Tyresö estimates that one assistant nurse can manage more than 100 users with the help of Cuviva’s platform.

A Future Way of Working

Natalie, who is employed as an assistant nurse in Tyresö Municipality, feels increasingly comfortable in her role as a digital assistant nurse. She believes it may become a future way of working. But it requires a great understanding of the needs of the elderly—something that can only be gained through human interaction.

Natalie herself feels she has a good knowledge of the needs of the elderly after many years in home care. She often emphasizes that it is about creating motivation:
“It’s about how you present things—to someone who doesn’t want to shower, for example, or to someone who is far too sedentary. Creating motivation requires attentiveness, persistence, and a bit of persuasion. I want my users to feel that I am here, I am available, and that things will go well.”

Solving the demographic challenge of more elderly needing help from fewer younger people requires new innovative and digital solutions. The role of the digital assistant nurse can be an important cog in the wheel. Natalie Simander is a passionate professional who uses technology as an enabler for a higher purpose.

Today, the elderly in Tyresö Municipality can look forward to a pleasant afternoon:
There will be a crayfish party tonight, and everyone using the app will receive a push notification about it under the “To Do Today” tab. “I hope many will come,” Natalie concludes.

Effect and Benefit

Replacing one weekly visit provides municipalities with an estimated saving of around SEK 1 million per year if digital support is used by 100 users. The calculation is based on the cost of the platform and one full-time assistant nurse per 100 users.

Benefits include:

  • Increased availability, continuity, security, and participation
  • Increased social interaction and new relationships
  • Greater awareness of municipal services and activities
  • Increased physical activity through exercises in the app
  • Reduced anxiety and uncertainty related to home care delivery
  • A new communication channel that reduces the burden on home care coordinators
  • Replacement of physical visits
