Pregnancy and a newborn’s early stages are among the most vulnerable, and most valuable, stages in life we have. In the EU, around 4 million children are born each year, and up to 7% are born prematurely, with a major impact on families and with significant consequences for the healthcare system.
Many complications can be prevented through better monitoring and earlier risk detection. That is at the core of Newlife, an EU-funded project bringing together 25 partners from six European countries and coordinated by Philips Electronics Netherlands.
The project develops innovative, non-invasive technologies and cloud-based solutions where AI and machine learning enable early risk identification. Newlife is demonstrated in five use cases, ranging from smart garments and a pregnancy belt to neonatal monitoring and digital support for parents.
Cuviva leads Use Case 1 – Pregnancy & Parent Companion, playing a central role in user needs analysis, concept development, and interface design. While other partners develop sensor technologies, Cuviva develops and designs the user interfaces and application layer for both patients and healthcare professionals, transforming sensor data into clinically meaningful information.
The solution is built in our MDR Class IIa-certified Remote Patient Monitoring platform, which is now being further developed for maternal and neonatal care. For structured integration with healthcare IT systems, HL7 FHIR is used as the interoperability standard.
As a result of this case, new parameters have been integrated into Cuviva’s platform, including fetal movements, fetal heart rate, and infant cry analysis. These parameters are visualized in a way that both supports clinical decision-making and strengthens patient engagement, while also providing insight into the health of the patient and the baby.
“When medical quality meets smart monitoring, we create safer pregnancies, a more secure start in life, and stronger decision support for healthcare. That is the driving force behind Newlife.”
– Petra Sommarlund, Project Manager, Cuviva
Through Newlife, we are strengthening our platform for pregnancy and neonatal care and building a scalable and interoperable solution for the future of digital maternal and child healthcare. As the project now approaches its conclusion in June, it is already clear that the work has laid a solid foundation for the next generation of preventive and connected maternal and neonatal care.
